Sderot has become known internationally for the Quassams that landed on its neighborhoods. But not many people know that the
town was named Sderot, which meaning boulevard in Hebrew, because of the many eucalyptus trees that fill its streets.
Located in the South of Israel, Sderot is mostly known for the Qassams, the rocket fire on a civilian population by Arab terrorits in Gaza
over the past 10 year. Before that, Sderot was just a small city
at the heart of the Israeli desert. Founded in 1951, Sderot has a population of approximately 20,000 people. The first wave of immigrants
came from Kursdistan and Iran . Ben-Gurion believed that the sparsely populated and barren Negev desert offered a great opportunity for
the Jews He set a personal example to the Israeli pioneers by choosing to settle in kibbutz Sde Boker at the centre of the Negev.
In the 90s with the wave of Jewish immigrants from former Soviet Union, Sderot has absorbed a large immigrant population. In 1996,
Sderot doubled its population and was announced a town.

Economy
In term of economy, life in the middle of the desert has never been easy to the people of the Negev, towns are quite poor and people
struggle to keep their jobs. Salaried men and women had a mean monthly wage which equals just a little more than a half than the
national mean monthly wage.
Sderot was established as an industrial center. Due to the rocket fire, world company Hollandia was forced to move out of Sderot.
Amdocs has also opened a branch in Sderot. Hundreds of Sderot's residents work in the factory. Five years ago, a rocket landed right
next the factory. The constant rocket fire from Gaza has devastated Sderot's economy. The security situation in Israel has a deterring effect
on potential investors and keeps visitors away from the city.
The economic difficulties in Sderot have caused many of Sderot's young men and women to search for new places to live.  The young
people who choose to live in Sderot and raise their families encounter difficulties in finding work and continuing their education.
Unemployment rate in Sderot is one of the highest in Israel.

Sderot - cultural center
For the Israelis, Sderot is known as the hometown of many performing artists and entertainers. This small city has produced four rock
bands and three ethnic bands that are well known throughout Israel, such as Tipex and Kensyat Hasechel are from Sderot, as well as
solo singers as Maor Cohen.
Since 2001, a film festival is annually held in Sderot. The first cinemateque in development towns was also established in Sderot.
When they were young, the members of these music bands practiced in Sederot's bomb shelters where they created their unique
sounds.

These amazing facts have been a source of inspiration to the Sderot dove project which aims to build a new music park for the children of
Sderot.
