Sderot lies less from one mile from the Gaza Strip and town of Beit
Hanoun. October 2000, the beginning of the Second intifada, has
started the rocket fire on the city. Since then, eight thousand
Quassams where rocketed on the southern Israeli town Sderot.
Hamas and Islamic jihad exploited the short distance from Gaza city
to launch a rain of Quassam rockets on the city, hopping to cause
much damage. The Israeli authorities have installed a "Red Dawn"
siren system to warn citizens of impending rocket attacks. Since the
siren is heard, the people of Sderot have only 15 seconds to find
shelter.
The number of lives lost in the rocket attack has been relatively low,
thanks to the alertness of the citizens. However, this statistics have
overshadowed the suffering of the citizens of Sderot. Rocket fire
disrupt the routine lives of Sderot's re residents, whether at work or at
school.
Sderot under attack
Many homes and stores have been severely damaged or even completely destroyed. There are families in Sderot who have
lost everything they had when Qusaams landed on their homes. For long periods of time, the people of Sderot avoided going
prices have fallen so
far below. Many of Sderot's residents are unable to move out even if they want to.
